Happy Thanksgiving 感恩节
Most people in China know there is "感恩节(Gǎn'ēn jié)" in North American. They also know in this day, people will have "火鸡 (Huōjī)" as dinner. "总统 (zǒngtǒng)" will "放生 (fàngshēng)" one of them in a "火鸡放生仪式 (Huōjī fàngshēng yíshì)". "南瓜派 (nánguā pāi)" is the most famous desert during the meal. In New York, Macy's has it's world famous "游行 (yóuxíng)" during the day.
Ok, let's see what do these words mean now.
- 感恩节(Gǎn'ēn jié): Thanksgiving. 感恩 can be used as a intransitive verb, means "owe; feel gratitude (to sb) in return for a service, favour, etc". Most common used form: 对于你的帮助,我感恩不尽 (bújìn, endlessly)。Normally we don't put object after "感恩", in this sense, "感激 (gǎnjī)" is more common to say "owe". For example: 我十分感激你给我的帮助。Note, both "感恩" and "感激" can be used as Adj. For example: ⋯⋯ 流出感恩的泪水。/感激的心情
- 火鸡 (huōjī): Turkey. They got "火 (huǒ)" in the name mostly because of the red face looks like fire.
- 总统 (zǒngtǒng): President of the country. President of the company will be called "总裁 (zǒngcái)".
- 放生 (fàngshēng):Release, to free captured animal. It's one of the most kind character in Buddhism. That's why you can always see a pool called "放生池 (fàngshēng chí)" in any Buddhism temple.
- 仪式 (yíshì): Ceremony; rite; function. For example: 就职典礼仪式后的舞会 (Jiùzhí diǎnlǐ yíshì hòu de wǔhuì. 就职,assume office。典礼, celebration。舞会,dancing party)。
- 南瓜派 (nánguā pāi): Pumpkin pie. "派" is a verb originally, means to send people under you to do something or to go somewhere. There's always the hierarchy in the verb 派。But when we mention the desert "pie", 派 is used for the phonetic translation.
- 游行 (yóuxíng): Parade or march. Sometimes when people don't want to mix these two meanings, they'd like to say "狂欢游行 (kuánghuān yóuxíng)" for parade and "游行示威 (yóuxíng shìwēi)" for political march.
Hope everybody will have a nice Thanksgiving. Enjoy the turkey meal!
