Share increases
1月13日,内地大型房企远洋地产(3377.HK)公告,中国人寿已在1月12日购入中化股份所持远洋地产的4.23亿股,持股比例由16.57%增至24.08%,从而跃居公司第一大股东。
This sentence is quoted from newspaper《财经网》, it is talking about 中国人寿(Zhōngguó Rénshòu, China Life Insurance) becomes the biggest shareholder in 远洋地产(Yunǎyáng Dìchǎn, Sino-Ocean Land) by buying 423 million shares from 中化股份(Zhōnghuà Gǔfèn, Sinochem Corporation).
To understand the sentence, the first thing we should do is pause the sentence in the right. I will put some space in between all words, like here:
1月13日,内地 大型 房企 远洋地产 (3377.HK) 公告,中国人寿 已 在 1月12日 购入 中化股份 所持 远洋地产 的 4.23亿 股,持股 比例 由 16.57% 增 至 24.08%, 从而 跃居 公司 第一 大 股东。
After this, the sentence is much easier, but we still have few words hard to understand:
- 房企 (fángqǐ) is the abbreviation of 房地产企业(fángdìchǎn qǐyè, property enterprise or real estate enterprise).
- 跃居 (yuèjū) is a verb, often used in the situation when someone or something moves up or soars up to the very top, for example:
本 公司 的 销售量 三年内 跃居 全市 第五。 (Our sale has jumped up to city's top 5 within 3 years.)
- 所持 (suǒ chí) is not a simple word, usually when 所 is used to combine another verb, the structure '所+V.+(的)' represents the verb related noun. like: 所知=知道的事情;所看到的=看到的事情/东西;所喜欢的=喜欢的东西/事情。 所持 is also the short form of '所持有 (chíyǒu) 的', which means:the shares China Life Insurance holds.
Usually, one syllable verb (like 知 in '所知') is very rare in '所+V.+(的)' structure, it can only be seen in idiom or sayings, and it is not followed by '的'. See example: 所见所闻 (suǒjiànsuǒwén, all you've seen and heard).
