ma? 吗 or ma! 嘛

We have two kinds of 'ma' sound in the end of some sentences, they sound similar, but one is used in question sentences, and the sentence is always read in rising tone; the other is used in falling tone, and seldom used in questions.  Let's see how different they are.

吗ma, is probably one of the first word you learn in your Chinese class.  Do you remember how does your teacher explain it?  It's the sign of the Yes/No questions.  In English we ask:

Will you come tomorrow?

In Chinese we will say a simple confirmative sentence with a 'ma' in the end:

明天
míngtiān lái ma ?

Yes, 吗 is the question 'ma'.

嘛'ma', is used in the end of confirmative sentence to show the special tones of the sentence, it can be dissuading or  a suggestion, sometimes even kindly order.  Note the word is often used in close relationship, like close friends, husband and wife.

老姜 汽车
一点
LǎoJiāng , qìchē kāi màn yìdiǎn ma !

In this sentence, we can tell the speaker is a very close friend or colleague of the listener.  Since 老姜 (LǎoJiāng) is a pretty informal name to some one has surname of 姜 (Jiāng) and older than speaker, there shouldn't be any hierarchy between these two people.

好好 生气
Yǒu huà hǎohǎo shuō , bié shēngqì ma !

Here, speaker is trying to let the listener not being angry any more.  We are also told they have intimate relationship.

嘛'ma' can also be used in another situation.  When speaker is explain something, and the reason he/she uses is very obvious and clear, he/she can use 嘛'ma' in the end of confirmative sentences, same, only in the relationship where both side are close to each other and speaker is never in the lower rank.
