Every time when students ask me to recommend some Chinese website for off-class reading, I always say they can try Chinese version of big international news site, for the quality of their articles.  However, one crucial step is to check if the articles are translated into Chinese before they start reading.

汽车制造商正赚得盆满钵满，销量在去年增长45%，2010年首季度同比增长72%。

Carmakers are cashing in, with sales rising 45 per cent last year, and 72 per cent in the first quarter of 2010, year on year.

Compare those two sentences above, you can clearly see the Chinese one  literally derives from English, even punctuation.   English sentence is correct and clear, while Chinese translation is horribly broken and confusing.  

First of all, it is not natural to say" 销量在去年增长45%", the correct expression should be "去年销量增长45%" if you want to say sales rose last year, or “汽车销量去年增长45%”.

See that is something Chinese differs from English, when "time" is used to indicate when the action happens or the state remains we put the time in the beginning of the sentence and do not use “在”. For example, "去年政府‘卖地’收入增长近九成" or “今年首季度发生汽车盗窃案80起”. 

When "time" is used to indicate certain period of the history of something, it is more like "something in certain period" in Chinese, in this sense we simple say "time" + "something", like “江西去年GDP突破7000亿” or "中国移动首季（度）净利按年升1.1%逊预期".

In addition, “赚得盆满钵满” is more like spoken expression rather than written phrase, especially for news and criticism.  “利润急增” will be a more suitable phrase for the article.  

Our work has not finished yet, to get a correct sentence one way is to say "the profit comes from the increased sales", like “制造商急增的利润来自销量的大幅增长，其中去年增加45%，今年首季度同比增加72%。 ”

The other way to correct the sentence is just simply use car industry instead of carmarkers, say “汽车行业去年销量增长45%，今年首季度同比激增72%。"
